What is Poetry?
Poetry does not receive the same attention in elementary and secondary schools as do other literary forms. As children enter school, they often have a natural affinity for poetry because of their love for Mother Goose and other nursery rhymes. Teaching practices, such as the time spent on poetry, are often responsible for the decreasing interest in poetry. A quick and easy lesson is the writing of Haiku poems.
The nCTE Poetry AwardNational Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) established an award to recognize living poets for its work for children ages 3 to 13. Popular poets that received the award are Silverstein and Prelutsky.
