Chapter 14: Informational Books
"Informational books are nonfiction and present current and accurate knowledge about something found in our universe." (Jones et al., 2012) Informational are one of two main categories of nonfiction books for children. The purpose of informational books is to report on the real world using firsthand, observable facts through books, magazines, letters, and journals.
Accuracy
All informational books are based on accuracy. Informational books inform readers about the world or to convey something about it. Therefore, the content must be factual and dependable. The accuracy of a book can often be recognized by looking at the author's notes, references, acknowledgements, and appendices.
Finding Good Informational Books
According to the text, there are five reasons that informational books "catch" the young reader's attention:
Attractive Design
catching the readers eye with attractive cover, interesting photographs and illustrations, and varies page layout |
Little-Known Facts
details that create images that spice up interest and provide a starting point for greater understanding of familiar and unfamiliar topics |
Unusual Viewpoints
perspectives one has probably never throught about |
Fascinating Comparisons
create intstant and powerful images, communicating clearly in much the same manner as metaphor or simile |
First-Person Accounts
feeling like taking a personal tour of a place or thing that the author has done |
